Low Carb Honey Mustard Sauce - Tasty Low Carb (1)

One of my favorite sauces is honey mustard. It always seemed to pair perfectly with pork tenderloin, chicken, pretzels, and even as a salad dressing. Lathering chicken breasts in honey mustard before breading always made for a delicious baked recipe. I even used it as a condiment for a grilled bratwurst or that ball game hot dog. The possibilities were really endless. I used to always have a batch of honey mustard handy in the refrigerator. It was simple to make and added so much flavor. AND CARBS!

Honey itself has 17g of carbs per tablespoon. That can add up quickly in any of the uses described above. Organic honey mustard sauce sounds like a great idea since organic is now all the craze. However, the culprit is the honey . . . “Whole Foods” brand organic honey mustard sauce has 16.5g of carbs for every tablespoon. Our honey mustard sauce has less than 1 gram of carbohydrate and still tastes great with a creamy mustard flavor and as sweet as the honey based versions. We accomplish this by using EZ-Sweetz of liquid Stevia. This is the perfect low-carb substitute.

Ingredients

The ingredients in our honey mustard sauce are simple and the assembly is quick. Literally, in 5 minutes you have the finished sauce. Although we do recommend refrigerating for a couple of hours so the flavors can meld.

The sauce is mayonnaise based. We like to be a little heavy with the mayonnaise in our recipe. Although this does yield a lighter coloring to the sauce than the store-bought versions that are heavier on the basic yellow mustard, it works best as a salad dressing or as a coating for baked chicken. If you prefer a more traditional coloring and heavier mustard taste simply add an extra teaspoon of your standard yellow mustard or go heavier on the yellow mustard and less on the Dijon variety.

We also add garlic powder and smoked paprika into our blend and, of course, apple cider vinegar. We have tried many apple cider vinegars and found that the best flavor and healthy option is made by Bragg. It may not be so easy to find in your local market, but you can order it here and it comes well packaged and fast. Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is simply the best! Many organics live off of the label “organic” and with a staple like this you may be tempted to say “they are all the same.” Try this one, you will definitely taste the difference.

The key ingredient is the sweetener. We used liquid Stevia drops for this recipe. Eighteen drops may seem like a lot, but it is needed to equal to two tablespoons of sugar. Remember this is replacing the sweetness of honey. It is also not very expensive.

As an alternative, you can use EZ Sweetz for your drops. It is a highly concentrated Splenda or liquid Sucralose. We find there is less of an after-taste with this product and it has no additives that are found in powdered versions. Six drops of the family size will equal 2 tablespoons of sugar. Two ounces of EZ Sweetz contains 800 drops so it is very inexpensive and will last a long time.

You can use either one and adjust the amount to your preferred sweetness.Mix all of the ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate for a couple of hours and you will have the perfect low carb honey mustard sauce for all of your uses. It will also keep as long as any store-bought version and be available when you need a quick honey mustard sauce.

If using an Olive Oil instead of Mayo, is it still 1/2 cup? Also all I have are stevia packets. Would you recommend me just getting the liquid drops?

You can try two packets of your Stevia – adjust according to taste. The nice part of this recipe is you can adjust the ingredients to your tast (mustard, etc.). The consistency would be the issue with immulsion using olive oil. That would also alter the taste. I would suggest sticking with the mayo for this recipe; but, you can always give it a try. Thanks for the question . . . Joanie.

The fat found in regular mayonnaise adds a lot of flavor. You can use low-fat, but it may not have quite the same taste. Give it a try . . . Joanie.

We usually make a batch and keep it in the refrigerator, but we use a lot of it so it is rarely around for more than two weeks. We do use a mason jar for storage. Hope that gives you an idea. Thanks for the question . . . Joanie.

This is a terrific recipe! I got a large container of mayonnaise and consequently had to scale everything up 5X. I did add an additional 1/2 tsp of paprika, and also added 1/4 tsp curry and 1/4 tsp cayenne. I can’t stand stevia, so I also substituted 8 packets of Equal. I think it tastes just like O’Charley’s honey mustard, which is my absolute favorite. As I’m a diabetic, this is just a fantastic recipe for me and it’s a real treat. Now I know that I can have unbreaded buffalo wings with honey mustard and it will be very low carb! Thank you for this great recipe!

So pleased that you like my recipe. We have a lot of positive feedback on the honey mustard. We generally avoid aspartame (Equal) as it does have a lot of negative feedback, but whatever works for you. The curry would be an interesting addition. Thank you for trying – we appreciate the comments . . . Joanie.

This is absolutely the best ‘Honey’ Mustard sauce anywhere! Low carb or not. I have made this several times over the last few months. As written is perfect! I do usually use Confectioner Swerve because I always have it on hand. Have also made it with liquid Stevia. Making it tonight to go with Chicken Cordon Bleu. Couldn’t find my yellow mustard! Had to use all Dijon but it’s still great. Not as good as your original recipe but will do in a pinch. The smoked paprika really gives it that edge. Such an easy recipe with simple ingredients I so appreciate as Low Carb Living can get very expensive. Thanks again for this perfect recipe!

We really appreciate your comment – if we had a lot of money we would hire you to write for us to help you pay for the expensive low carb ingredients. 🙂 We love this recipe, as well, and always have it on hand. It works so well with chicken. Enjoy the Chicken Cordon Bleu . . . Joanie.

Actually, the recipe calls for using Liquid Stevia drops. You could use regular Swerve if you prefer (usually confectioner Swerve is used for baking and icings), and you should try 1 tablespoon, plus 1 teaspoon. You can certainly taste the finished product and sweeten to your liking. Thanks for the question . . . Joanie.

Each serving is about two tablespoons. A simple conversion is to divide the volume value by 16 – so two tablespoons (one serving) would be 1/8 cup. It is extremely low in carbs. Try it our, we know you will love the taste. Thanks for the comment.

We generally use Best Foods Real Mayonnaise or Hellman’s. They are the lowest in carbs (yes, even mayonnaise has some carbs). Here is a link to a post in “Anna’s Low Carb Kitchen” where she writes about the best purchased low-carb mayonnaise. We hear a lot of positive feedback on Duke’s brand. There are many recipes out there where you can make your own if you prefer. A good Keto recipe can be found at “tasteaholics.” Here is that link – Keto Mayonnaise. How much sweetener would you use if you’re using powdered erythritol?

    • Low Carb Honey Mustard Sauce - Tasty Low Carb (46)

      Joan and Chris

      April 19, 2018 at 6:28 pm ·Reply

The amount of liquid Stevia or EZ-Sweetz are both equal to one tablespoon of sugar in terms of sweetness. Powdered Erythritol is usually a bit more than one-to-one with sugar. We would use one tablespoon and add another teaspoon. Of course, you are replacing honey so you may like it a bit sweeter and might add a little more. We have a post that provides handy conversions for the three sweeteners in question. Check out our Low Carb Sugar Substitutes and Conversion Charts post and enjoy some of our other recipes. Thanks for the question and for checking out our site. We always have our Low Carb Honey Mustard on hand!

The recipe should make about 6 ounces or about 10-12 tablespoons. We indicate 6 servings on the recipe so each serving would be about almost 2 tablepoons. We use it for dips and also for coating on chicken and pork, so it is hard to be so precise. We do know it is a staple for us and is very low in carbs. Let us know how you like it. Thanks for the comment.
