I’m extremely picky when it comes to my eyeglasses. In fact, it may sound dramatic, but I’ve only ever loved one pair of glasses in my life — a semi-rimless browline pair fromKate Spade New York. Needless to say, I’ve held onto these frames for dear life ever since I bought them in 2019, but last month, I ended up at the ophthalmologist due to sudden blurry vision. The cause? Eye-strain from too much computer time, scratched lenses, and the wrong prescription. I needed new glasses stat, but after ordering (and returning) multiple pairs online, I realized I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to my Kate Spade frames. That’s when I looked into LensDirect’s lens replacement service. Despite the mixed reviews, I decided to take a chance on the service, and as soon as I got my old frames back, I knew I had to write a LensDirect review.

In a rush? Get the fast facts:

  • Get new lenses put into your old frames for less
  • Works with any brand (eyeglasses or sunglasses)
  • Everything is done online and through the mail
  • Process takes about three weeks
  • Full-service prices start at $59
  • DIY lens replacement option for sunglasses

What is LensDirect?

LensDirect is a leading online retailer of contact lenses, prescription eyeglasses, and sunglasses. Oftentimes, you can find name-brand products for surprisingly reasonable prices. (I ordered my contacts from this company a few times during the pandemic, and was super happy with both the price and the fast shipping.) LensDirect has been around for almost 30 years, and in that time, the brand has earned quite a reputation for its stellar customer service.

How Does Lens Replacement Work?

  1. Place your order: First, go to LensDirect.com to place your lens order. You’ll need to answer a few questions about your current glasses and prescription. Specify your existing frame type (plastic, metal, semi-rimless, or rimless) and choose the types of lenses you need. Then upload your prescription and select any add-ons before checking out.
  2. Send in your frames: After your order is placed, LensDirect will either give you a pre-paid shipping label to download and print, or send you a box in the mail. (I opted for the latter.) Either way, you put your old frames in the mail and send them off.
  3. Wait while your lenses are replaced: The expert lab technicians at LensDirect use the latest technology to fit your old frames (eyeglasses or sunglasses) with new lenses. The process takes between 10 and 12 days.
  4. Go back to wearing your favorite glasses: Within a few more days, your favorite frames should be sitting in your mailbox with brand-new lenses.

My Honest LensDirect Review

I’ll be honest: I was worried about putting my favorite glasses (which I paid over $250 for at my former optometrist’s office) in a box and mailing them off somewhere. I’d read ample complaints on Reddit about similar lens replacement services, during which companies lost frames and customer service representatives stopped responding. Still, my glasses were so scratched and blurry, I could barely see through them — and after trying several new frames from other companies, none of which looked good or were particularly high quality, I figured it was worth a shot.

It turns out I had absolutely nothing to worry about. In short, I’m thrilled with LensDirect’s lens replacement service. The online questionnaire was easy and the box contained simple directions. I was even able to schedule a pickup from the US Postal Service online, so I didn’t have to go to the post office; I just put the box back in my mailbox and waited.

In less than a few weeks, my Kate Spade glasses were back in my possession, but now they had crystal-clear lenses in the right prescription. LensDirect even cleaned my frames for me, getting the dirt out of all the nooks and crannies, so now, my glasses look and work like new.

How Much Does It Cost?

For the full-service lens replacement package, prices start at $59. That said, depending on which upgrades you choose and whether or not you need special lenses (like progressives or bifocals), your particular order may cost more. You can also choose add-on features, like blue-light blocking lenses or transition lenses, which add to the cost.

For reference, my lens replacement package cost $84 in total, and I chose polycarbonate clear lenses with a standard coating for distance.

How Long Does It Take?

According to the brand’s website, there are four steps to the process. Placing your order takes one to three business days, sending in your glasses takes one to three business days, creating your new lenses takes 10 to 12 business days, and delivery takes one to three business days. By that math, you should have your glasses back in 21 business days at the most. In my case, my order was confirmed on March 9, and my glasses were back in my hands by March 28.

What About DIY Lens Replacement?

I didn’t use LensDirect’s DIY Lens Replacement service, so I can’t exactly vouch for it — but if you have a well-known brand of sunglasses with a broken lens, this process is supposedly faster and cheaper. Search for your sunglasses by brand or keyword, and then choose your specific pair. For significantly less than a new pair, LensDirect will ship you new lenses in the shape and color of your choice, so you can just pop them into your old frames and get back to it.

What Do Other Reviewers Have To Say?

LensDirect has an overall 4.7-star rating on TrustPilot, which is pretty darn impressive. When you search specifically for the word “replacement,” the feedback is a little more mixed; some buyers are displeased with the slow processing time, but overall, if you can afford to wait a few weeks rather than pay high prices in person, reviewers seem to agree that LensDirect is worth it.

“Trying to get replacement lenses locally was a big expensive hassle — with complete eye exams and prescription needed for magnifying reader lens. I was thrilled to find LensDirect,” one reviewer wrote. Another raved, “Their customer service and their products (lens replacement for existing frames) are top of the line!”

For the few thatdidrun into issues throughout the process, customer service was apparently quick and helpful: “Thereplacement lenses I ordered for my sunglasses didn’t fit quite correctly, so I reached out and Claire got right back to me. She answered my many questions and got things all worked out for me!” Another raved about the “unbelievable customer support” and said their representative “went way above and beyond” to ensure a resolution.

Basically, if you’re not ready to say goodbye to your favorite pair of glasses, but your lenses have seen better days, this lens replacement service gets top ratings from me.
